Yoga in Preschool
Our preschool program is founded on the principles of Neo-Humanism, guiding children to cultivate mindfulness, compassion for all beings, and a universal outlook through the practical application of ancient yoga and meditation practices. New Day School's holistic approach to early education supports children’s intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth.
The Neo-Humanist Curriculum introduces yoga practices to children through dedicated yoga asanas or classes. These yoga classes in preschool encompass the following aspects:
Asanas: Yoga Postures
Mindful Breathing
Kiirtan: Chanting
Meditation Practice
Story
Asanas (Yoga Postures)
Asanas yoga in preschool ensures health and mental equilibrium when practiced regularly. They work on the muscular and skeletal structures and the body's endocrine system. Although traditional Ananda Marga yoga practices prescribe asanas for those over 16 years of age, the young children at New Day School are introduced to simplified postures and exercises that will develop coordination, concentration, and body awareness. By making yoga a fun game and something the children can enjoy, they grow to like it, motivating them to continue in practice into their adult years
Mindful Breathing
The connection between the respiratory system and the nervous system has long been recognized. Mindful breathing yoga in preschool helps children relax, reduce stress, manage emotions, and increase body awareness. Through these techniques, children learn to focus and build self-control over their body and mind.
Kiirtan (Chanting)
Kiirtan yoga in preschool is used to open the heart and create a peaceful state of mind for meditation. In Kiirtan, the repetitive singing of the mantra "Baba Nam Kevalam," which literally means "Only the Name of the Beloved," facilitates a sense of togetherness and joy. By focusing on one’s beloved entity or objects in the world through the ideation of the mantra, one can enter a calm and peaceful state of mind.
Meditation Practice
Meditation yoga in preschool helps children connect with their highest potential. As they learn to sit quietly and begin to control their busy mind, they are introduced to the concept of silence and inner peace. Meditation allows children to look deep inside themselves and recognize their inner greatness.
Story Integration
The classes of yoga in preschool in Portland are usually thematic or story based to make the practice fun, light-hearted, and playful while teaching universal ethical values, Kiirtan, and meditation. These stories reflect the core message and spirit of yoga practices in a simple and engaging way. Keeping children involved in the story, creating and expressing it through movement, keeps the class innovative and lively.
At New Day School, our kids' yoga program is designed to foster in children a sense of love for mindfulness, self-awareness, and holistic development, laying the foundation for a balanced and fulfilling life.
